Here's some basic information on how an expatriate works in Chengdu.

How do foreigners apply for jobs in Chengdu?
Application for the Alien Employment License by the Employer
Where to apply: Chengdu Exit and Entry Administration Center, Windows 11-14, Building 3, No.2, Renmin Road West, Qingyang District)
Application for the Z Visa
Foreign nationals with the employment license and the employer’s invitation must apply for the Z Visa to enter China.
Obtain Alien Employment Permit
Apply for alien employment permit at the Chengdu Bureau of Foreign Experts Affairs with relevant materials (including employment contract) within 15 days upon entering China. (Windows 11-14 at Chengdu Exit and Entry Administration Center, Building 3, No.2, Renmin Road West, Qingyang District)
Documents required:
  • Application Letter of Foreign Employees (officially sealed)
  • Registration Form of Foreign Employees (original copy)
  • Alien Employment License (original copy)

  • Residence Registration Certification
  • Two recently taken half-length, bareheaded and full-faced 2-inch color photos

  • Copy of the Employer’s Business License and Organization Code Certificate

Obtain Residence Permit for Employees
Apply for the permit by submitting documents including Employment Certificate, Health Certificate, and Residence Registration Certificate at the Chengdu Exit and Entry Administration Center within 30 days from the date of entry

Get permission from the academic institutions
Apply for Residence Permit in the appropriate category at Chengdu Exit and Entry Administration Center

Tips:
Foreign students should not be employed, engaged in trade or other business activities while studying, but are allowed to participate in work-study programs with the consent of the academic institutions.
Study Visa (X1 Visa) is granted to those who come to China for study, training or internship for six months or more; Visitor’s Visa (F Visa) is granted to those who come to China for short-term training, internship for no more than 180 days.
