Wide and Narrow Alleys, a vista of historical elegance and local leisurely life, a melting pot of diversified cultural elements. The Wide and Narrow Alleys were first built during the Qing Dynasty as the residence for Manchurian soldiers. The lanes remained residential until 2003 when the local government turned the area into a cultural center consisting of many restaurants, teahouses, bars avant-garde galleries and residential houses.
Kuan and Zhai Alleys are manifestations of the past of Chengdu, a city that is both old and young.
Not from from the Wide and Narrow Alleys, across the Shudu Avenue, is another community of ancient buildings in the city downtown — the Qintai Road, lined with art galleries, jewellery shops and Hot Pot restaurants.
Huanhuaxi Park is the largest park within the downtown area of Chengdu, with lush vegetation, a large lake, a wetland and a number of pseudo-classic constructions. It is one of the city’s best sites for birds watching and the long Path of Poems — a pavement with the citations of famous poems inscribed on the blue stone — extends from the entrance of the park almost to the gate of Du Fu Thatched House Museum.
Qingyang Temple (Green Goat Temple) is among the oldest and most well-known Taoist temples across China. In history, it was one of the major sites of festivals and folk culture activities for Chengdu people. The temple has treasured a collection of the oldest wooden printing blocks of the most important Taoist classic. The origin of the Quingyang Temple dates back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907) but most of the temple’s remaining buildings are restorations during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and more specifically during the reign of Emperor Kangxi in the 17th century. Within a short radius of the temple are a number of cultural sites of the city, including the Baihuatan Park, the Cultural Park and Songxianqiao Antique Market.
