Endoscopic surgery is a new technique that has gained popularity in recent years since it causes lesser traumatic damage to the patients, compared with the traditional surgery. The technique guarantees smaller incisions, quicker recovery, and fewer side effects. Since it was first introduced to China in1991, the technique has developed fast and found wide applications in the fields such as gynecology, urology, kidney and heart surgery, orthopedics and even brain surgery.
One of the new fields is the treatment of cancers, and Liu is a pioneer of the endoscopic cancer surgery in China.
“Traditional surgery leaves obvious scars, causing trauma both physically and mentally,” said Dr. Liu. He made his first experiment of the laparoscopic operation on appendicitis in 2010, which turned out to be a great success.
Up to now, more than 90% of appendicitis operations have been done with the new technique at the Third People’s Hospital of Chengdu, and Dr. Liu has set eyes on more complicated ailments.
For years, Liu has developed a habit of keeping away from TV and hardly spent much time with the cell phone. He explained that a good eyesight is of crucial importance in surgical operations. “I must protect my eyes,” he said, “they don’t only belong to me; they belong to my patients.”
