The Beginning of Autumn (Li Qiu, “立秋” in Chinese) is the 13th term of the 24 traditional Chinese solar terms (a supplementary system in the Chinese calendar to guide farm work) and falls on sometime between Aug. 7 and Aug. 9. From the Beginning of Autumn, summer ends and the weather gets cooler and cooler gradually. The Chinese character “秋” (Qiu) means autumn and time for harvest of grains. Autumn is the transition season between hot summer and cold winter. After the Beginning of Autumn, though the weather is still hot, it irreversibly gets cooler and cooler.
The climate in autumn is dry, and it is cool at night but still hot in the daytime. According to the theory of traditional Chinese medicine “moistening the body when it gets dry”, it’s better to eat more food which can help remove heat, ease thirst and soothe nerves, such as sesame, honey and white fungus, etc. In autumn, the air humidity is small, and it’s easy for human skin to become dry. More attention should be paid to drinking enough water and taking more kinds of vitamins in autumn.
