24 Solar Terms: The Summer Solstice

Authors: Go Chengdu

The Summer Solstice is the 10th term of the 24 traditional Chinese solar terms and falls on June 21 this year.
The Summer Solstice (Xia Zhi, 夏至 in Chinese) is the 10th term of the 24 traditional Chinese solar terms (a supplementary system in the Chinese calendar to guide farm work) and falls on sometime between June 21 and June 22, when the sun moves to the celestial longitude of 90 degrees. On the day of the Summer Solstice, the sun moves nearly above the Tropic of Cancer, when the northern hemisphere has the longest sunshine day in a year.
After the Summer Solstice, the subsolar point will move toward south, and the sunshine dwindles day by day in the northern hemisphere.
Chengdu people have ways with distinct styles to soothe the heat during the period:
Eating cold noodles
Many choose to have a bowl of cold noodles when they have no appetite in the hot weather. Cold noodles mixed with ginger water, garlic, vinegar, soy sauce and other seasonings makes a bowl of authentic Sichuan cold noodles to help people cool down.
Playing in cold water
In the hot summer, many people in Chengdu love to have an intimate contact with water. Either they are swimming pools, or streams in ancient towns, places with water are always filled with people.
Lotus appreciation
The summer solstice is the best time to enjoy the lotus. There are many places in Chengdu where you can appreciate the lotus. In addition to Sichuan University and People's Park in the urban area, several counties also have beautiful lotus ponds waiting for visitors.
