Mt. Qingcheng-Dujiangyan Scenic Spot
The 2017 Dujiangyan·Li Bing Culture International Tourism Festival will take place on July 17 at the Mt. Qintcheng-Dujiangyan Scenic Spot. Each year on June 24 of the Chinese Lunar Calendar (the day falls on July 17 this year), a traditional ceremony to worship Li Bing (about 302-235), designer of the Dujiangyan Irrigation System, and his son, is held to commemorate their great contributions to local people in flood control and agricultural prosperity.
A grand sacrifice ritual to commemorate Li Bing and his son will be launched at the Erwang Temple in Dujiangyan Scenic Spot on July 17, and many local performances and side shows will be staged there.
The Dujiangyan Irrigation System in northwest Chengdu's Dujiangyan City was originally constructed around 256 BC by the State of Qin (an ancient Chinese state) as a dam-free irrigation and flood control project, and is still in use today. Li Bing, the then governor of Shu for the State of Qin, and his son headed the water conservancy project, which harnessed the river using a new method of channeling and dividing the water rather than simply following the old way of dam building.
