The celebration for the 130th anniversary of the Wangjiang Pavilion & 23rd Chengdu Bamboo Culture Festival is being staged in the Wangjianglou Park.
Bamboo is hollow, straight and green in all seasons. Praised highly by Chinese literati, it is looked upon as a spiritual and cultural symbol of elegance, purity, modesty, integrity and uprightness in Chinese culture.
The Wangjianglou Park in Chengdu is a bamboo-themed park in China with more than 200 species of bamboo. The celebration for the 130th anniversary of the Wangjiang Pavilion & 23rd Chengdu Bamboo Culture Festival is being staged in the park, with various activities, including a flower arrangement art exhibition, a cultural forum and a landscape design competition. Eight groups of bamboo landscape installations are set up there temporarily for the event.
Located on the south bank of Jinjiang River in the east downtwon of Chengdu, the Wangjianglou Park is renowned for its cultural heritages represented by the ancient Wangjiang Pavilion, also called Chongli Pavilion, Xue Tao Memorial, and a large collection of rare bamboos. The Park built in memory of Xue Tao (about 768 - 832), a poetess living in the Tang Dynasty (618 - 907), is now a major historical and cultural site under state-level protection.
Standing by the Jinjiang River, the Chongli Pavilion is a major building inside the Park. It was built in 1889 and has long been known as Wangjiang Tower (River-overlooking Tower).
The Wangjianglou Park boasts the largest collection of bamboos in China. Xue Tao loved bamboos and described them as "upright and perseverant". To commemorate Xue Tao, later generations have planted various species of bamboos in the park, which is thus called the "Park of Bamboos".
