Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan and a major city in western China. It is one of the most important economic, transportation, and communication centers in western China.
According to the 2007 Public Appraisal for Best Chinese Cities for Investment, Chengdu was chosen as one of the top ten cities to invest in out of a total of 280 urban centers in China. In 2011, Chengdu was named one of the 4 “most livable cities” in China by the working committee for the China Urban Development Report of the China Association of Mayors.
Chengdu is located on the fertile Chengdu Plain, which is known as the “The Land of Abundance”. It is the fourth most populous city in the Chinese mainland, with 7.12 million residents living in the urban area and 6.73 million living in the surrounding. With a powerful economic development in recent years, it is becoming a modern metropolitan city, but traditions are well preserved.
Archaeological discoveries suggest the area of Chengdu had become the center of the Bronze Age culture around the time of the establishment of the ancient Shu Kingdom about 3, 000 years ago. It was a prosperous city most of the time in history.
Chengdu is a sub-provincial city. It has direct jurisdiction over 9 districts (Jinjiang, Wuhou, Qingyang, Chenghua, Jinniu, Longquanyi, Qingbaijiang, Wenjiang, Xindu), 4 county-level cities (Dujiangyan, Qionglai, Pengzhou,Chongzhou) and 6 counties (Shuangliu, Dayi, Pixian, Jintang, Pujiang, Xinjin).
Chengdu is the first Asian city to win a UNESCO listing as a City of Gastronomy. The food here is some of the best in the world and although most people will say Sichuan is known for spice, the truth is that flavor is at the heart of Sichuan cuisine. It is also famous for its teahouses and tea culture that emphasizes relaxation.
Chengdu is home to giant pandas. Some pandas live in the remote mountainous areas in the west and north to Chengdu and the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, in the northern suburb of the city, has gained an international reputation for its efforts in preserving the rare species. The research facility draws thousands of visitors each year from all over the world.
