The Chengdu Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone, set up in 1988, was designated as one of the first batch of the state-level hi-tech development zones in 1991. It was opened up to APEC members in 2000. In addition, it has been appraised as a model state-level hi-tech development zone by the Ministry of Science and Technology of the P.R.C. many times.
