In 2021 China issued a master plan for the construction of the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle in southwest China and pointed out that Chengdu and Chongqing propose to build an integrated comprehensive transportation system, become an international airline hub and build a world-class airport cluster in the areas.

Speeding up the construction of a world-class airport cluster in Chengdu and Chongqing is one of the important tasks of the construction of the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle.

In March in 2022, the Civil Aviation Administration of China issued a guideline on accelerating the construction of Chengdu-Chongqing world-class airport cluster which states that the airport cluster will take shape by 2025 and be fully completed by 2035.

On June 27 in 2022, Chengdu Tianfu International Airport will celebrate the first anniversary of its opening. It has maintained a good and stable operation since its opening. Chengdu is the third city in Chinese mainland after Beijing and Shanghai, and the first city in central and western China to have two international hub airports. Now, Chongqing has also started the planning and construction of a new airport, which is scheduled to be completed in 2030.
