Recently, the 19th Tien-yow Jeme Civil Engineering Prize, the top award in China for civil engineering projects, was announced. A total of 43 projects were selected in the list, including three projects in Chengdu:
Chengdu Open Air Music Park
Western China (Chengdu) International Expo City Project (Phase I)
Chengdu "Jinsha Public Transportation Hubs Complex" TOD (transit-oriented development) Pilot Project
Zhan Tianyou (Tien-yow Jeme) is known as the "Father of China's Railroad". In 1909, as the chief designer, he led a Chinese team to finish the construction of the Beijing-Zhangjiakou railway. Despite the arduous task of building this railway, Zhan with his colleagues strived to overcome a series of problems such as complex terrain and underpowered engines. They finally built a zig zag railway two years ahead of schedule. It was China's first railway designed and built by its own people, which showed the development of the country's technology and economy.
The Tien-yow Jeme Civil Engineering Prize is an annual award jointly established by China Civil Engineering Society and Beijing Zhan Tianyou Civil Engineering Science and Technology Development Foundation.
