Hero in Gaston Leroux's novel, the Phantom residing in the labyrinthine underground world beneath the Opéra de Paris (Paris Opera House), has found his incarnation in the opera by the Cuban Spanish Dance Troupe, which was founded by the legendary Cuban ballet master Alicia Alonso.
The Troupe is the first and only Spanish dance troupe from Latin America that enjoys great success in Europe and North America, acclaimed as the "Rose of Latin America".
Terror haunts the Paris Opera House as a series of mysterious incidents happen: the former soprano of the opera is almost killed by a falling backdrop, and a creepy and illusory male voice echoes in space. The voice is from a "phantom" living in the labyrinth beneath the opera house. He falls in love with an actress, Christine Daaé, and tries to help her improve her singing and become the new soprano. However, Christine is in love with Vicomte Raoul de Chagny, the opera's agent, and this causes a series of ensuing acts of jealousy, chasing and murdering.
Finally, the phantom realizes his possessiveness is overcome by the love for Christine. He disappears and returns to the dark world, leaving his mask and cloak on the stage.
