Today’s recommendation is Shuguo Juandu (蜀国鹃都), a tourist attraction of the season for flowers viewing, photo taking and spring outing.
The highlight of Shuguo Juandu is the 15th Chinese Azalea Exhibition, held April 1-May 12, when over 1, 000,000 pots of Azalea (Rhododendron) will be put on show at 14 theme spots at the site for flower appreciation.
Self-drive: a car drive for about 1 hour from downtown Chengdu will bring you to the gate of Shuguo Juandu, in Pidu District in western Chengdu. There are three parking lots with 3,000 parking spaces outside the scenic area. Parking fee is 10 yuan. Car-driving is not allowed in the scenic area.
Public transportation: bus P06, P16, P47; Chengdu Metro Line 2, at Xipu station
You can do the sightseeing on foot, taking a ride in the sightseeing van or renting a bicycle.
There are a camping area with yurts (circular domed houses), fountains, pavilions and an agreeable environment for a tea break, an amusement area with circus performances and other entertainment programs for children. The most eye-catching sights are the azalea viewing spots around the site with wonderful flowers on display.
The best period for Azalea (Rhododendron) appreciation is from early April to early May when the flowers are in full bloom. Besides local azalea species, there are also new types imported from Germany and South Korea.
