With its pace of opening up to the outside world stepping up, Chengdu established a sister-city relationship with three more foreign cities, as well as a friendly and cooperative tie with eight more overseas cities last year.
New Sister Cities

La Plata is the capital city of Buenos Aires Province, the largest and most populous province in Argentina. Founded in 1882, the city, the fourth most densely-populated one in the country, covers an area of 203 square kilometers, with a population of 740,000. It is 58 kilometers away from Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina. La Plata is well developed in finance, education, culture, sports and other areas.

Maputo is the capital of Mozambique, the largest city as well as political, economic and educational center of the country. Its major industries involve textile, food, ceramics, furniture and leather shoes, etc. As one of the most dynamic cities in sub-Saharan Africa, Maputo is noted for its cashew nut products in the world, and has a great potential of investment in infrastructure, agricultural products processing, tourist real estate, hospitality operations management, and sci-tech innovation, etc.

Located in southeastern Belarus, Gomel is the capital of Gomel Region and the second largest city in the country. It was founded in 1142, and now covers an area of 139.7 square kilometers, with a population of 536,000. The city's major industries include machinery manufacturing, food processing, chemical engineering, and production of building materials, etc.

Santa Cruz (Bolivia)
Date of the establishment of the friendly and cooperative relationship: March 27, 2018
Santa Cruz is the largest city in Bolivia and capital of the Santa Cruz department. As the second economic and cultural center of the country, Santa Cruz covers an area of 1,590 square kilometers with a population of 1.64 million (2016). It is well developed in business, service, light industries as well as transportation, culture and education.

Montevideo is the capital and largest city as well as political, economic, trade, financial and cultural center of Uruguay. Founded in 1730, the city has a population of 1.38 million in an area of 530 square kilometers. Its key industries include logistics, tourism, meat-packing, as well as wool and leather trade.
Kampala (Uganda)
Date of the establishment of the friendly and cooperative relationship: May 19, 2018
Kampala is the capital and largest city of Uganda. Covering an area of 200 square kilometers with a population of 1.53 million, the city is home to many corporate headquarters. With a favorable climate and beautiful natural landscape, Kampala is dubbed an epitome of Uganda which is known as "The Pearl of Africa".

Arequipa is the second most populous city of Peru, as well as the capital and largest city of the Arequipa Region. It was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in December 2000. With sophisticated irrigation agriculture, the city is well developed in wool textile and leather industries, plastic manufacturing, food processing, steel making and small-scale chemical industry. It is also a critical transportation hub along the Pan-American Highway.

Moscow (Russia)

Moscow is the capital of Russia, with 12.51 million residents in an area of 2,561.5 square kilometers. Founded in 1147, it has many UNESCO World Heritage sites such as Novodevichy Convent, the Kremlin and Red Square. It once served as the venue of the 1980 Summer Olympics, and one of the host cities of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The city's major industrial activities include manufacturing machinery, ships, precise instruments, non-ferrous metals, chemicals and light products.
Yekaterinburg (Russia)
Date of the establishment of the friendly and cooperative relationship: August 27, 2018
Yekaterinburg is the fourth largest city in Russia and the administrative center of Sverdlovsk Oblast, with a population of 2.21 million in an area of 468 square kilometers. Founded in 1723, the city is named after the Russian emperor Peter the Great's wife. It is one of the host cities of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. And its major industries include machine manufacturing, metallurgy, metal processing and production of building materials.

Sapporo is the fifth largest city of Japan and the capital of Hokkaido prefecture, also the major economic center of northern Japan. Covering an area of 1,121.26 square kilometers, Sapporo has 1.9 million residents. It is famous for its tourism and food producing in the world, and is the host city of the 1972 Winter Olympics.
Penang Island (Malaysia)
Date of the establishment of the friendly and cooperative relationship: December 15, 2018
Penang is a Malaysian state located on the northwest coast of Peninsular Malaysia. It has two parts separated by the Straits of Malacca: Penang Island and Seberang Perai. Penang Island is well developed in such industries as electronics and tourism.
