The event was sponsored by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), guided by the National Development and Reform Commission of PRC, and undertaken by the Chengdu Municipal People's Government. Themed "Developing Green Economies - Building the Park City," it aimed to promote communication and collaboration in the green development among countries and cities, and explore ways of building park cities.
Mr. Gong Weixi, Senior Coordinator, UNIDO South-South and Triangular Industrial Cooperation, talked about the reasons why the roadshow was held in Chengdu during an interview with media.
"At the 3rd 'BRIDGE for Cities' event, which is schedule to take place in October at UNIDO's headquarters in Vienna, Austria, cities for case studies will be the highlight," said Mr. Gong. Chengdu, together with Shanghai, Trieste and Vienna, will showcase their achievements and potentials in inclusive and sustainable urban and industrial development during the conference.

According to Mr. Gong, Chengdu was selected to be one of the cities for case studies, because of its experience and achievements of building itself to be a park city. "We believe that building park cities can solve two major challenges facing cities in developing countries. That is, how to balance industrial development and environmental protection, and how to balance rapid urbanization and improvement of urban residents' living standards." Chengdu's experience is good for other cities along the Belt and Road to learn and refer to, he said.
Co-organized by the UNIDO and the Finance Center for South-South Cooperation, the annual "BRIDGE for Cities" event aims to promote the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development via the Belt and Road Initiative, with which it shares many similarities, and to encourage municipal officials and development stakeholders to scale up their engagement in inclusive and sustainable urban and industrial development initiatives. As of the Chengdu roadshow, 18 countries in Asia, 14 in Europe, 4 in North America, 12 in Africa and 1 in Latin America have submitted their applications for participating in the 3rd "BRIDGE for Cities" event.
