Chengdu ranked fifth among top 100 Chinese cities in China Digital Economy Index (CDEI) at the 2017 China ”Internet Plus” & Digital Economy Summit convened April 20 in Hangzhou.
According to the rankings, the city agglomeration covering Chengdu and Chongqing in western China is rapidly emerging as the fourth growth pole of digital economy in China, following Bohai Rim Economic Circle, Yangtze River Delta and Pearl River Delta regions.
The rankings also show that major cities in China all focus on developing the digital economy which has apparently promoted their GDP growth and boosted local employment opportunities. Based on Chengdu's index, the city moved up 1 place overtaking Hangzhou to No.5 on the rankings this year, showing a powerful impetus to propel western China's development in the digital economy.
In terms of the development in the digital industry, the total index of the four areas (Guangzhou & Shenzhen, Beijing & Tianjing, Shanghai & Hangzhou, and Chengdu & Chongqing) is 144.52, 36.98% of the national total. Though it ranked last with an index of 18.5 among the four areas, Chengdu and Chongqing area grew fastest. In 2016, the area's index grew 320.48%, far more than 141.36% of Guangzhou & Shenzhen, 109.1% of Beijing & Tianjing and 191.11% of Shanghai & Hangzhou.
Chengdu's industrial index in 2016 increased 280.28% compared with that in 2015, and the city performed quite well in health care and transport & traffic sectors, both of which outstripped the national average level.
