Chengdu, only after Beijing, has the second largest number of holiday makers among big cities in China, according to a forecast released September 25 by China’s Ministry of Transport.
Prior to that, another forecast on Chengduers' trend in travel during the National Day holiday and Mid-autumn Festival delivered by tuniu.com, one of the top online travel service providers in China, indicates that Chengdu people have a strong inclination to travel during the upcoming holidays. And the current online travel bookings show that the number of outbound tourists has exceeded that of those to travel at home. In addition, Tuniu's data also show that over 40% of Chengdu travelers have planned an itinerary for eight days or longer, and 30% of them have planned their trip for over 12 days.
Since 2012 when the Chinese government waived highway tolls for passenger vehicles during national holidays, the country has been seeing a rise in self-drive tours during the Golden Week holidays. Statistics show that most Chengdu road travelers are fond of traveling with their families to surrounding areas such as Xichang, Dujiangyan, Seda, Chonqging, Daocheng, Mt. Emei, Leshan, Wulong, Enshi, and Zhangjiajie.
