Since ancient times Sichuan, or more specifically the Chengdu Plain, has been given the name the Land of Abundance for the fact that it is one of the primary food production bases in China.
The Chengdu Plain covers an area of about 23,000 sq.km and is the largest plain in southwestern China. It lies on the marginal region of the Sichuan Basin and rivers from the high mountains to the north and west bring soil and water supply to the vast land.
Bestowed with mild climate, ample rainfall and fertile soil, the Chengdu Plain enjoys a favorable natural environment for bio-diversity and high-yield agricultural production.
Since ancient times Sichuan, or more specifically the Chengdu Plain, has been given the name the Land of Abundance for the fact that it is one of the primary food production bases in China. In warring times, the land often served as a shelter for refugees from other parts of the country.
The great Minjiang River, together with its tributaries, runs across the Chengdu Plain to form an expansive water network. The river nourishes the land but may pose a dangerous threat during the flood season, if not for the protection from the Dujiangyan Irrigation System, which was built over 2, 200 years ago but still plays a significant role in boosting the prosperity of the areas.
In fact, Dujiangyan Irrigation System is thought to be the source of prosperity of Chengdu Plain. The water project is about 60 km from downtown Chengdu to its northwest, in Dujiangyan City, and water from the project irrigates a total area of 10 million mu (660, 000 hectares) and keeps the vast land from the threat of droughts or flooding with its regulation of the water supply from the Minjiang River.
In 2000, Dujiangyan Irrigation System was listed as a site of UNESCO World Heritage, together with the Qingcheng Mountains.
